Back at last - the Lockerbie Quilt

It's been a long time, but I'm back - not going to give excuses, they all seem too ridiculous. Anyway hopefully I can get back to jotting down some thoughts.

I think I mentioned previously the Lockerbie Quilt, made by 5 members of Solway Quilters in Dumfries (Kate Henderson, Elma Graham, Ena McKay, Barbara Watts, Margaret Stockdale) for the Dryfesdale Visitor Centre in Lockerbie. The quilt has been made to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the Lockerbie Air Disaster which will be the 21st of December 2008. It really is incredible to think that it was 20 years ago - it simply doesn't seem so long.

The quilt shows a tranquil scene, the tree in the foreground has 259 leaves representing the people who lost their lives in the air, and the 11 pebbles on the shoreline represent the people who died on the ground in Lockerbie. The tree underpinned by strong roots shows the continuity of life, which reflects the way the community of Lockerbie and families of those who died, have striven to overcome this tragedy.

The quilt is hanging in the Dryfesdale Visitor Centre, Dumfries Road, Lockerbie, and will be available to view from now. If this is somewhere you have not been, it really is a lovely place, very calm and serene, the memorial gardens are also at the visitor centre and well worth a visit.

What a wonderful quilt! It is so peaceful and one can even imagine being in the scene. A rememberance to last forever.
Well done for interpreting what was a terrible disaster.
